Sanctus Real Former Lead Singer, Matt Hammitt’s Son Defying Odds
Former lead singer of Sanctus Real, Matt Hammitt, was featured on Good Morning America this week with his family to give an update on his son, Bowen’s long journey with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a rare heart condition that he was born with 10 years ago.
Bowen Hammitt was born with HLHS, a rare heart condition which left his left side of his heart severely underdeveloped. He was given a life expectancy of just a few weeks after birth and he underwent his first of three open-heart surgeries at just a few days old.
Fast forward 10 years and Bowen is living his life to the fullest and shocking his doctors with his progress! His dad describes him like a healthy, normal little boy who loves to swim, climb on rocks and is now following in Matt’s footsteps as a musician.
“Through three open heart surgeries and all different kinds of struggles that Bowen has had, now we just see this incredible picture of hope,” Matt shared live on GMA Wednesday. He went on, “We see life here, and we’re so blessed by Bowen and the person that he’s becoming and the life that we have in him.”
Earlier this year, Bowen wrote his song, “Heart Strong” and recorded this sweet music video with other survivors of congenital heart defects. Get the tissues out and watch below:
