Michael W. Smith’s “Go West Young Man” Album Turns 30
If you remember this song, you’re a TRUE Michael W. Smith fan…
Michael W. Smith’s “Go West Young Man” album is 30 years old this year – crazy! This was the album that really put him on the map, as the single “Place In This World” made its way to mainstream radio and peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1990. For a Christian single to chart on the mainstream chart is major!
Smith’s career stats are pretty impressive. Since his first album release in 1983:
- He’s recorded 14 studio albums
- He has 80 released singles
- He has recorded more top-10 albums on the Billboard Christian Albums chart (31) than any other artist

The very first song I heard from Michael W. Smith was “Place In This World”. I wasn’t a fan of him or Christian Music back then, but after 9/11 had happened, I bought his “Worship” album and helped me get back on track and started playing Christian Music more.
